Delving into this Globe's Spookiest Grove: Contorted Trees, Unidentified Flying Objects and Chilling Accounts in Romania's Legendary Region.

"Locals dub this location a mysterious vortex of Transylvania," explains an experienced guide, his breath producing clouds of condensation in the crisp night air. "Numerous people have disappeared here, many believe it's an entrance to another dimension." Marius is leading a visitor on a evening stroll through frequently labeled as the globe's spookiest woodland: Hoia-Baciu, an area covering one square mile of ancient indigenous forest on the edges of the Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

Hundreds of Years of Enigma

Reports of unusual events here go back hundreds of years – the forest is named after a regional herder who is reportedly went missing in the far-off times, together with his entire flock. But Hoia-Baciu gained global recognition in 1968, when an army specialist called Emil Barnea took a picture of what he claimed was a unidentified flying object floating above a oval meadow in the heart of the forest.

Many came in here and never came out. But rest assured," he adds, facing his guest with a smile. "Our tours have a flawless completion rate."

In the years that followed, Hoia-Baciu has drawn yoga practitioners, traditional medicine people, UFO researchers and paranormal investigators from across the world, interested in encountering the mysterious powers reported to reverberate through the forest.

Contemporary Dangers

Although it is one of the world's premier destinations for paranormal enthusiasts, this woodland is facing danger. The outlying areas of Cluj-Napoca – a modern tech hub of over 400,000 residents, described as the Silicon Valley of Eastern Europe – are expanding, and construction companies are advocating for authorization to cut down the woods to build apartment blocks.

Except for a small area containing locally rare Mediterranean oak trees, the grove is not officially protected, but Marius is confident that the company he was instrumental in creating – a local conservation effort – will assist in altering this, persuading the government officials to appreciate the forest's importance as a travel hotspot.

Eerie Encounters

While branches and autumn leaves break and crackle beneath their footwear, the guide recounts numerous local legends and reported paranormal happenings here.

  • One famous story describes a young child disappearing during a family picnic, then to rematerialise half a decade later with no recollection of her experience, showing no signs of aging a day, her clothes without the tiniest bit of soil.
  • Frequent accounts detail mobile phones and camera equipment inexplicably shutting down on venturing inside.
  • Emotional responses range from full-blown dread to moments of euphoria.
  • Certain individuals state seeing bizarre skin irritations on their skin, hearing ghostly voices through the trees, or sense fingers clutching them, despite being certain nobody is nearby.

Research Efforts

Although numerous of the stories may be unverifiable, numerous elements visibly present that is undeniably strange. Throughout the area are trees whose bases are warped and gnarled into fantastical shapes.

Various suggestions have been proposed to clarify the misshapen plants: that hurricane winds could have shaped the young trees, or inherently elevated electromagnetic fields in the soil explain their crooked growth.

But scientific investigations have found insufficient proof.

The Notorious Meadow

Marius's walks permit participants to take part in a modest investigation of their own. When nearing the clearing in the forest where Barnea took his well-known UFO photographs, he gives the traveler an ghost-hunting device which registers electromagnetic fields.

"We're venturing into the most powerful part of the forest," he comments. "See what you can find."

The vegetation suddenly stop dead as we emerge into a complete ring. The only greenery is the trimmed turf beneath our feet; it's clear that it hasn't been mown, and seems that this bizarre meadow is organic, not the creation of human hands.

Fact Versus Fiction

Transylvania generally is a area which stirs the imagination, where the division is indistinct between reality and legend. In traditional settlements faith continues in strigoi ("screamers") – supernatural, form-changing bloodsuckers, who emerge from tombs to terrorise regional populations.

The famous author's famous character Dracula is always connected with Transylvania, and the historic stronghold – a Saxon monolith situated on a stone formation in the mountain range – is keenly marketed as "Dracula's Castle".

But even legend-filled Transylvania – truly, "the territory after the grove" – seems real and understandable versus this spooky forest, which give the impression of being, for factors nuclear, climatic or purely mythical, a hub for fantasy projection.

"In Hoia-Baciu," the guide comments, "the division between reality and imagination is remarkably blurred."
