Heat & Trail Blazers Secure Initial Victories Following Player Detentions
The Miami Heat put up 86 opening half scores versus the Grizzlies
Miami Heat earned a decisive 146 to 114 win over the Grizzlies in their first NBA match after player Rozier was arrested for alleged unlawful sports betting.
Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested in connection with a sweeping FBI probe into sports betting. The two individuals contest the allegations.
However, the Heat were focused as they put up eighty-six first-half points to be ahead of Memphis by 39 after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year existence.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later said Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is important to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces the situation."
The Trail Blazers additionally won their first game since the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the team to a decisive 139-119 win against the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Speaking about the arrests for the first time, league head Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and its fans than the fairness of the game," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner further said an league probe into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a match he played for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an indictment.
"And 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
