The Mayor-Elect confirms his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key policy, did not confirm his residency plans immediately following his triumph in November.
"The choice rested on the security of my family and the need to directing all of my focus on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Political Debate
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
However his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he is from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his modest Astoria digs.
With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
