The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family go about their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
