Israelis have come together around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not pose a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to review the conditions of the proposal.

A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at 7 PM local time.

The source explained the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have yet to deliver any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are striving to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Critical Points in Talks

  • An enduring truce
  • The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance deliveries
  • Future governance of the area

Public Sentiment

In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No place feels like home anymore and until every captive are released none of us will be secure."

"When we see all home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to recover," she added.

In front of the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."

Research now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the war to finish in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of the gathering, mourners gathered to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the main city, bombardments were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the dusk falls, the dread arrives with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, described.

"My family are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."

"Every second we check the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."

Medical Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had accepted the corpses of six people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city reported additional fatalities had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while seeking help to the southern area, medics said.
