The White Sox Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Major $34 Million Deal.
In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract bringing in the power-hitting player.
Deal Structure and Incentives
The deal includes a $1 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16M for the upcoming season and $17 million for the final year.
Notably, Murakami's compensation can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for winning the MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for placing in the top ten.
- An identical bonus for winning the top rookie honor.
His deal also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his approval and grants him a free agent at the end of the term. Extra provisions include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.
Compensation and Historical Context
As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows are also entitled to a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.
Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever Japanese to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.
Player Profile
Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a emerging lineup in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.
The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.
His last year was limited to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Despite recording 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing mostly at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's clutch hitting were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he hit a victory-sealing double that scored teammates for a thrilling 6-5 win. The next night in the title match against the USA, he blasted a tying home run in the early innings, helping Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.
The power hitter is set to be formally introduced at a press conference on the coming Monday.
